Roseau, Dominica

I got lucky!

Yesterday, there was an announcement that the local authorities in Dominica had given our dock space to another cruise ship, so RIVIERA would have to anchor and use her tenders to take people ashore.  The person making the announcement made it sound like a last-minute change.  I was instantly suspicious.

This morning we arrived to find Regent's SPLENDOR tied up at "our" dock.

  1. Regent, like Oceania, is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line.

  2. Regent passengers pay a higher price point.

  3. A check of SPLENDOR's online itinerary revealed that months ago, she was scheduled to be here today.

Really, a last-minute change?  I think not.

Really glad that we anchored?  Personally - yup.

SPLENDOR was tied up to the dock on her port side.  Presumably, RIVIERA would have tied up the same way.  The position of the pier and the way the shoreline lay would have meant that in my stateroom on the starboard side, all day long, I would have stared at an open ocean with a few boats moving around on it. At anchor, RIVIERA's starboard side faced the shore.  I had a great view all day long. As previously noted, I got lucky.

Pam is again filling in the blank about onshore activities during this port call.

Leaving Roseau, headed for Soufriere. It was an incredible drive along a very high and winding coastal road with spectacular views.

We passed the government house on our way out of town.

This was a scene throughout the island. They certainly know how to recycle.

This is a local town typical of what we saw along the way.

In Soufriere, we saw Saint Mark's Catholic Church. It was built in the 19th century with volcanic stones.

A view of the southern tip of the island. While we were on the beach, we put our feet in the water. When we looked down, bubbles were coming from the ocean floor. This is a result of the geothermal activity below. The island contains many smoking fumaroles, hot springs, and volcanoes.

After a wonderful day spent on the island, our tender driver ensured we had a safe ride back to our ship.
